Building permits — FAQ
What is the Building Permits Survey?+
The Building Permits Survey (BPS) is a monthly U.S. Census Bureau program that counts new privately-owned residential building permits issued by roughly 20,000 permit-issuing jurisdictions, by structure size (1-unit, 2-unit, 3–4 unit, and 5+ unit buildings).
How current is this permit data?+
This site loads the most recent 18 months of BPS data plus annual totals back to 2019. The latest month is May 2026; the Census publishes with roughly a two-month lag and revises recent months.
Do permits mean homes were built?+
No. A permit authorizes construction; it does not mean a unit was started or completed. Permits are a leading indicator of housing supply, not a count of finished homes.
